Neck Injuries

Neck pain is one of the most common conditions patients complain of when seeking chiropractic care. We are spending increasing number of hours per day at the computer, for both work and leisure purposes. This leads to bad posture and straining of the neck. People that have been in one or more car accidents also appear to have chronic changes to the curve of their neck from whiplash or sprains. Other causes of neck pain could be a disc herniation, which may also be accompanied by nerve impingement. This usually cause pain down one or both arms and numbness/tingling

Frequently Asked Questions

Neck Injuries

What are the most common causes of neck injuries?

Neck injuries most often come from car accidents (especially whiplash), sports, falls, and repetitive strain from desk work or phone use. Poor posture and even sleeping in an awkward position can trigger neck pain.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden back-and-forth motion of the head, most often in a rear-end car accident. It strains the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck and can cause pain, stiffness, and headaches that sometimes don't appear until a day or two later.

What are the symptoms of a neck injury?

Common signs include neck pain and stiffness, reduced range of motion, headaches, and muscle spasms. Pain that spreads to the shoulders or arms, or numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or hands, can signal a pinched nerve and should be checked promptly.

Can a chiropractor help with a neck injury?

Yes. Chiropractic care can relieve neck pain by restoring proper alignment and movement, easing muscle tension, and reducing pressure on nerves. It is often combined with physical therapy, massage, and targeted exercises for a fuller recovery.

How soon after a car accident should I get my neck checked?

As soon as possible, ideally within a few days. Whiplash symptoms can be delayed, so an early exam helps catch problems before they worsen, and it creates documentation if an insurance or injury claim is involved.

Do you offer imaging for neck injuries?

Yes. Our Wheeling office has on-site X-ray and open standing MRI, so we can image your neck and begin a treatment plan without sending you to a separate facility.

How long does it take to recover from a neck injury?

It depends on the injury. Mild strains may ease in a few weeks, while whiplash or disc-related injuries can take longer. Your provider will give you a timeline based on your exam and how you respond to care.

Is neck injury treatment covered by insurance?

Most insurance is accepted. For auto-accident and work injuries we also accept attorney liens and Letters of Protection (LOP), so you can begin care right away.
