Hip pain can be caused by several factors, some dependant on age. Hip pain in children could be due to a slipped growth plate or to disrupted blood supply leading to necrosis of the tissue (Avascular Necrosis). Hip pain in both adults and children can be caused by trauma or injury which could cause a fracture or tendonitis of the muscles surrounding the hip. With older age we see hip pain due to osteoporosis, arthritis and bursitis. Occasionally the hip pain could be originating from another source such as the lumbar spine. Disc herniations in the low back can cause referred pain into the hip and also down the leg leading to Sciatica.
