Knee pain is often seen in people with active lifestyles such as athletes and avid runners. Pain could be due to injury to the many structures of the knee such as the menisci, ligaments, tendons, or fracture to the bone itself. Knee pain in children could be due to Osgood-Schlatter disease, which is irritation of the ligament of the knee cap where it attaches to the shin bone. It is common in adolescents who play sports and is more common in boys than girls. With increasing age we see knee pain due to arthritis, the cartilage starts to deteriorate and the joint space decreases. Obesity puts more strain on the knees and may lead to faster deterioration.
